Academy News Story: Home for the Holidays

December is the month of giving! During this busy holiday season in America, people are full of well wishes and the spirit of giving. American Grooming Academy is feeling the holiday nostalgia as well, with our “Home for the Holidays” Spa package. American Grooming Academy is donating $5.00 from the sale of every “Home for the Holidays” Spa Package to our home rescue Wag Again K9 Rescue.

Every year in the United States 2.7 Million healthy dogs and cats are euthanized in American shelters. Thats one healthy animal every 11 seconds. Having your pets spayed and neutered is a very important part of dog or cat ownership. Adoption of these animals is at an all time low with so many “backyard breeders” and “puppy mill” type dogs being “bought”. Only 30% of household dogs and cats are adopted from shelters. Although 83% of pets in most American households are spayed or neutered, the amount of puppies and kittens produced does little to slow the overpopulation of pets in country. There are an estimated 3500 shelters and countless smaller rescues throughout the country that are trying to slow the decimation of so many domestic pets. With the internet and Facebook many more pets are being adopted simply because more pets are being viewed by the web based public.

Our home rescue organization is called Wag Again K9 Rescues, Run by Deborah Holland. Wag Again K9 Rescue is an all breed non-profit rescue run by an all volunteer staff. They are dedicated to finding stable happy homes for abandoned and shelter pets pulled from euthanasia lists. Deborah has a no questions ask return policy for any family who believes they have made the wrong decision ensuring that dogs placed by Wag Again never end up in shelters again.

Deborah Holland is more to American Grooming Academy than a dog rescuer. She does anything for American Grooming Academy. Twice a week she transports rescue dogs to our campus for students to groom. This is not only good for the students, but helps the rescue dogs become more adapted to different situations. This program has also helped many adoptable rescue dogs find homes, because students that see these dogs regularly get attached and make the decision to adopt. “Almost every student and employee has adopted a rescue dog from Deb, including myself. Deb pulled “Binx” off the euthanasia table knowing that I would see her and fall in love and I did!” Former instructor Kat Marchant.

On Saturdays Deborah and her volunteers set up adoptions in front of American Grooming Academy. One saturday Jelisa Hamilton walked out after a hard day of grooming and students and saw a group of puppies and her mother who were being fostered after being signed over to a local emergency clinic. It was love and Jelisa adopted a small brown and white chihuahua mix named “Buggy”. “Shes the love of my life, I take her everywhere with me!”

Being involved in grooming rescue dogs is important to American Grooming Academy and is an important lesson for our students. Deborah routinely gives student lectures about adoption, and homeless dogs. Many students volunteer their time and give their tips as donations. For all her amazing work, American Grooming Academy wanted to give back. So in the month of December we are donating $5.00 from each “Home for the Holidays” Spa package to the dogs of Wag Again K9. Any pet brought into American Grooming Academy can add the “Home for the Holidays” spa package to any bath or groom package. ‘Tis the season of giving, and with your help American Grooming Academy can make the holidays a little extra special for some dogs and one very special rescuer!
