Because of these and many other reasons it’s no wonder the whole nation gets involved with finding a solution this month!

Breast cancer in Pets

Breast cancer in pets is known as Mammary Tumors, or mammary cancer. This cancer is observed in both sexes although it is most common in unspayed females, and is seen as large masses that can start small around all five mammary glands. Many times if left untreated mammary cancer cells spread to the lymphatic system and can cause death. The process for removal of mammary tumors is surgical. Mammary cancer in pets can almost be completely eradicated by early spay of intact females.

National Pit Bull Awareness Month

image02Of all the amazing breeds of dogs in this world one stands out above the rest as the most misunderstood. The slang term “Pit Bull” refers to many American Kennel Club breeds including American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the American Bulldog. This breed not unlike the history of the Doberman in the 80’s is now the new target of people who do not recognize the breed for their true nature.

image01Brought to America with the colonist in the 17th century the dog who is the forebears of these breeds were all purpose farm dogs, whose primary job was to guard children, livestock and the home. Later many Pit bull type dogs gained recognition. Sallie from the Civil War, Sergeant Stubby from 1916 and most famously Petey from the 1930’s. October is National Pit Bull Awareness month and this year we have lots of work to do. Here are some ways your can help.

  • -Go to your local shelter and walk a Pit Bull type dog. 78 percent of all dogs euthanized in this country are Pit Bull type dogs.
  • -Get involved in education. Learn about the breeds you don’t know and try to meet some! This goes for all types of dogs!
  • -Realize that animals have no choice in what they become. It is all about the environment in which they live.
