Statistics recently released by the American Pet Products Association, estimated the total number of dogs owned in the U.S. market to be 77.8 million, and the total number of cats owned to be 84.8 million.

An estimated $62.75 billion will be spent on pets this year. This is just one reason that the pet care industry is ripe for starting a business. IBISWorld estimates a 6.1%: Increase in employment in the grooming and boarding sector by 2017, The actual amount spent in 2015 on Pet Services: grooming & boarding was $5.41 billion, with estimated projection of $5.73 billion in 2016.

Interestingly the annual amount spent per house hold on grooming/grooming aids for dogs is twice the amount spent on cat grooming/grooming aids. As a groomer I recognize that the cat grooming industry is an untapped opportunity.
