easter_dogNational Adopt a Pet Day is right around the corner.  Here are American Grooming Academy Tips & Tricks for the sunshine filled month of April.

Life Style &  picking the right pet for you

Choosing a new family member should not be taken lightly. You need to understand  your family’s needs and resources when making the commitment to adopt a homeless dog or cat.  Here are some ideas to narrow down your search!

plaid_dog-How active are you? Understanding if you want a couch potato or a marathon runner makes choosing a pet that much easier. Looking for specific mixes of certain breeds gives you the best chance at finding the right fit! The first and best place to look is in the AKC Complete Dog Book! This book breaks down the jobs all dogs were meant to do! Understanding the breeds mentality will help you understand what you are getting! Many mixed breed pets have some resemblance to who their parents are and trying to figure that out helps to create a basis for understanding the breeding.

homeless_helpFor example, if you’re a runner, choose a sporting breed mixed dog! Netflix and Chill? No problem something mixed with breeds in the Toy group is where you want to go! Do not be afraid to go to your local adoption event and meet the candidates! Maybe even spend time fostering the dogs in rescues in your community to see what the right fit for your family could possibly be!

Adoption events!

Going to an adoption event is not only fun for a pet lover but it gives rescues a chance to get their adoptables a chance to meet the public. The next and best part of your life could be waiting for you! Research adoption events in your area as well as breed specific adoptions!

With the amazing beauty that is Spring also comes the parasites!

bugsOH BUGS!! On us, on the picnic table, on our pets! Knowing and understanding about spring parasite season is base knowledge for every pet owner. If your a top notch bug encyclopedia or need a brush up, AGA is here to help! Unfortunately, these parasites are numerous and love to make your pet their new home. Spring brings about fleas and ticks in rampant numbers, and mosquitos are out and about and ready to pass on deadly heartworm to your pet. Other parasites that are less well known but are still important to protect your pets from, include roundworms, hookworms and whipworms. Fleas and ticks ;though bothersome, can easily be eradicated from your lovely spring day with a quick trip to the vets office!

sick_dogTopical medicines as well as oral medications can destroy these two pests! Heartworm disease, infected through mosquito bites on your pet can be deadly if untreated, or if your pet is not fully protected. If you live in an area prone to fresh standing water and or humidity, your pet should be on a heartworm preventative. Talk to your vet about protection for your furry friend! Also do things to help stop mosquitos from congregating where your pet spends their time. Empty standing water basins or use pet safe bug repellant! This horrible worms that can affect you and your pet traditionally live in the intestines and feed on intestinal tissue. Most of the time pets are infected through eggs passed in an infected dog’s feces.

Important steps in keeping you and your pet safe include the use of dewormers, which kill off the parasite and stops the transmission of eggs. Taking your pet for stool test to diagnose the exact kind of worms and regularly washing your hands will all help in the fight of these nasty parasites!
