Many illness plague puppies. Some puppy illnesses are very serious and others just require some easy to use meds. Here are some of the most common ways to distinguish these puppy illnesses, but remember, only a veterinarian can diagnose puppy illnesses!

Canine Parvovirus

Canine Parvovirus is very common in puppies from 8-16 weeks old. It is mainly seen in bully breeds but can affect any dog with a compromised immune system. Canine parvovirus causes vomiting and diarrhea, with a very pungent smell. Early detection can help most puppies survive but many die quickly without medical attention. This virus is the number one killer of puppies in the U.S. Make sure you see your vet right away if you suspect parvovirus.

Mange

Mange is a skin mite that commonly affects puppies whose immune systems are low or whose mothers immune systems were low during gestation. It commonly starts with hair loss around the eyes, then proceeds to the rest of the body if untreated. There is a common smell with mange and it can be either contiguous or non-contagious. If treated early mange is very treatable, and generally within a few short weeks hair is regrown.
