Our October news story is about a student who made it all the way from Pennsylvania. Melanis Abbott’s career choice after high school was dental assisting! She had been in the field for 35 years and in that time finding a love for her job and her clients! Mel’s dentist whom she had worked for for 26 years retired leaving Mel jobless. Mel knew she needed a change so she sought out her choices online.

“I had always been dreaming about grooming. I started at home grooming my Yorkies when I received a terrible grooming job. Recently I found myself with no job, an empty nest and a need for income. Now seems like a perfect time to work in my dream job until retirement!”

Mel came to American Grooming Academy from Pennsylvania. She realized while researching that AGA was the best choice for her for multiple reasons:

Mel completed the Advanced Professional Pet Stylist Program, over the Spring. Once Mel got back home she and her husband set about making an empty room into a full service grooming salon.

Mel’s new shop is called  D’Tails Pet Services, and her phone rings daily. Being from a small town Mel says: “My reputation has gone far” her clients love the new look of the pets in their community. Mel would eventually like to to start a boarding kennel in her home where the small town people in her community could feel safe about leaving their pets. “Who knows I may never retire…I love dogs….I love talking to people… and I love to groom!”

Having Melanie at American Grooming Academy was an amazing experience! Our office manager Celecia describes Mel as “Insightful, Joyful and Pleasant.” The knowledge she gained at American Grooming Academy will help lead her on her way through the pet industry, and because of our Continuing Education standard, if Mel is ever in the area she is welcome to come back for more!
