Pool & Beach Safety!

dogs_fun_on_beachThe cool wet water play of summer is something almost every pet enjoys, from romps on the dog beach to playful plastic pools, to Olympic champion swimmers at the lake. Water safety for pets is an important part of this time of year. Here are some pet water safety tricks!

1. Teach your pet how to safely enter and exit the water. Make sure fido knows how to get out of the pool, so they dont panic. Also make sure your pet knows where you are all all times, never let them lose you as a visual.

2. Make sure your pet can handle swimming- size up your pet to make sure he can swim while keeping his nose and mouth in the air.

3. Get a life vest! Nervous about little Binky swimming, fit them for a life vest so you have no worries and can enjoy the water play!

4. Call it a day BEFORE your pet becomes over tired! Some breeds will stay in the water as long as possible. Restraint is your job, not theirs!

sunglasses_dogSunburns and Skin cancer is not only a human problem but affects more than a million pets each year. Help protect your pet from sunburn, and help them feel better if they do get a little toasty.

Never use human sunscreen on your pet. Animal sunscreens can be found in lotion and spray form. Many are sold at feed stores and pet retailers. read the labels before applying.

Make sure there’s shade. Put up an umbrella to keep harmful rays from your pet when they want to rest.

If your pet gets sunburned, check with your vet on the type of sunburn it is. they may give you a lotion to help or a medicated shampoo that will help your pooch feel better!
